For four decades, a former synagogue on Hester Street has been a studio, living space, and renovation project for the artists Thomas Nozkowski and Joyce Robins.

The building’s simple, open plan was consistent with the young artists’ work and living philosophies. “When we came to New York in the early sixties, we were taught by Abstract Expressionists,” says Nozkowski. “And I remember discussing with our teachers that, you know, it was morally important to live and work in the same place. You fried eggs the same way you painted paintings.”

The Spacebuster, commissioned by Raumlabor, was brought back for its third installment with the Ideas City Festival.  The structure offers visitors a chance to intertwine their individual perceptions with those of leading artists and architects.  Throughout the day, the space held performances on “Nothingness”.

StreetFest takes place around the 
Bowery and in Sara D. Roosevelt Park.
